BRIAN SPOLANS
StatementI’ve always been interested in organizing narrative elements from popular media. Some of these narrative devices are repeated so often that they are recognized without very much information. These repeated elements whether through genre, plot, or intent create a strange vacuum in storytelling where information is merely referenced from a larger pool of collective familiarity. This pool of collective familiarity continues to grow and become more complex as our culture continues to be inundated with short narratives meant to be absorbed quickly. I think this is a testament to how amazingly aware and adept modern culture has become. My work attempts to categorize, reorganize and combine archetypes from cinema, video games, literature, and other forms of communication. I utilize the narrative accessibility of these archetypes and combine them until their context feels changed. Addendum
