KERI OLDHAM

Bio

My artwork is made from various materials found around me, styrofoam, silk, paper, leather, and plastic. In my newest work I have been focusing on textiles; discarded fabric scraps and hand knitting. In making art I am interested in exploring the mind-body dualism of identity and the body. Many of my sculptures and drawings are incarnations of how we mentally manage our bodies. It seems to me that the process of creating an identity is a kind of balancing act between nature and consciousness.

My work is meant to show the mysterious side of our inner natures through non-functional garments and works-on-paper that seem to have a life of their own. I am fascinated with the symbolisms of fashion and how clothing communicates social acceptance, sexuality, and identity. Clothing both communicates and fails to communicate who we are; I’m interested in how we internalize that clash of logic.
