MATTHEW DAVID CLARK

Statement

My most recent work began with accumulating packaging from everyday consumption such as cereal boxes, juice cartons, boxes from crackers and muffin mixes. The packaging is mostly from food purchases and inspired by the products that are necessary in order to live day to day. The packaging also comes from products that are desired and not necessity. We live in a packaged world and within a few days the studio was filled with options, possibilities and inspirations for drawings and objects.

Drawing and sculpture has always created an interesting tension in my work. The immediacy of paint or drawing transforms a wall or space. The act of either casting an object or making an object, turning it over in your hands creates a connection with the real world rather than presenting a window. My work travels between the window and the real, an immediate image and a cultivated form by assembling them together.
