TIM BEST
BioI graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago Studio Arts program in 1995. Since then I have lived in Santa Fe, NM, Chicago, IL, New Orleans, LA and now Dallas, TX. I have been involved with the arts community in those places and have shown in spaces that focus on new media, photography and video as documentation of performance. Select exhibition venues include 3 Ring Circus Productions and Barrister's Gallery in New Orleans, Giola Gallery and Three-Walls in Chicago, Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, and Medicine Factory in Memphis, TN. Publications include the Times Picayune and The Gambit in New Orleans and the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. I have given lectures at Rhodes College in Memphis, and I will be speaking this winter at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. I am also involved in two projects in New Orleans. Co-founding Nova Projects, an artist registry focusing on Contemporary Visual Artists in New Orleans, and Alternative Arts New Orleans, a blog to open up critical discourse to the local artist community as a whole. StatementI am photographing myself and others performing various emotional reactions to uncertain causes. These images are inspired by my past experiences as a professional in the IT industry's public and private sectors. Within the industry I observed a lot of uncertainty about job security and the customer's whim. For me this was the opposite of an expectation of mine, fostered by my middle-class upbringing, that corporations were stable organizations an individual could depend on for a living. I believe that this situation in America contributes to a larger sense of uncertainty concerning morality and our responsibilities at home and abroad. Addendum
