Joanne Isabella Alma Cervantes is an artist working in drawing, sound, and video. Born in Long Beach, California, Cervantes received her MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Texas in 2017. Her most recent body of work, Reality Ranch, was exhibited at Hardin-Simmons University in February 2018.

My work is a record of experience. It is made of personal accounts, admissions and utterances. I draw to bear witness to the things we shared and how we lived.

Hands on the wheel, eyes on everything. My hands are on the wheel.

I am trying to figure out what happens when we die, to the wonder and to the rage. Standing in the bedroom, staring at my grandmother’s things. Watching my mother smoke cigarettes on the porch, not seeing me watching her. Thinking about the things they told me. We watched a lot of movies together.
