Christian Rodriguez was the Project Space Solo Show Award winner for College EXPO 2020, juried by Tamara Johnson and Trey Burns. Nature of Being is a series of paintings exploring concepts of space, form, color, and texture by Christian Rodriguez.

“My paintings are abstract, void of subject matter. Like my sculptures, I hope that the forms depicted in each painting communicates to the audience as an individual entity that attempts to assert its existence. My initial process varied; sometimes I began with compositional sketches, and other times I began more intuitively without a clear concept in mind. Regardless, I was constantly responding to the forms and colors throughout the process as I tried to maintain a spirit of experimental expression.”

Artist Statement and Biography:

Christian Rodriguez was born in Dallas, Texas in 1992. He received his AA.ARTS at Brookhaven College in 2015 and B.F.A in Drawing and Painting and Sculpture at the University of North Texas. Christian’s work is expressive, abstract, and full of mark making.  He draws inspiration from nature, his childhood memories, current events/experiences, and his spiritual beliefs. Rodriguez paints through observation of still lives, figures, and landscapes; searching for essential color and form while conveying a personal response. As an artist, Christian takes full advantage of any opportunity he has to involve himself with the arts. In 2015, he volunteered and assisted performing artist, Janeil Engelstad in her group performance, “Darkness Descends Slowly; Light Wraps Itself Around Us (Heaven is Now)”. Rodriguez also explores different mediums such as clay, concrete, and bronze. An earlier sculpture, “For a Better Life”, which stems from current US/Mexico border events, was purchased by Brookhaven College during the 2017 Spring Juried Show. Even though he experiments with other material, he returns to painting. Christian claims that having this break from painting allows him to “loosen up” and explore different concepts. He hopes that one day he can give back to his community through his artistic practice.
