We’re proud to announce the show “Proper Gender Please”, curated by our vice-president and artist, Haley Cook.

Proper Gender Please is a phrase stolen from signs once put on the entrances of businesses, intended to stop trans and genderqueer folks from entering. And what, we must ask, is considered a “Proper Gender”?

The Texas government continue to deny our identities, taking away medical rights and our own bodily autonomy. This is an attempt to steal the right of individuals to make their own decisions, and a refusal to respect those decisions once they are made, all despite the fact that less than 1% of people who have transitioned say they regret doing so. There is data to suggest that as much as 82% of transgender individuals have considered killing themselves, and 40% have attempted suicide. These rates are even higher among transgender youth.

That’s why this show is a celebration of the diversity of gender and the artists who exist within that spectrum in the DFW area. Within each gender identity, there is no “proper” way to be. Each artist presented here is their own individual, with their own ideas about what makes them who they are. This is their show for their art. It’s a celebration of us! We’re here, we’re alive, we love ourselves and love one another, and we’re here to stay. Let opening night be an evening of gender debauchery, community, and wonderful art by wonderful people.

Opening reception is February 17th, from 7-10 PM. With a performance by Mickey M.

The show will run until March 3rd, open Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5PM at the 500x Gallery.

“Comfort Creatures” is an ongoing series of drawing paintings and soft sculptures created by Dallas Smith. Through these various works Dallas aims to give shape and character to various feelings of wonder, nostalgia, anxiety, and isolation. In his own words “A comfort creature is a spirit that we create when engaging with and expressing these emotions. Once living as residents of our souls the creatures now manifest physically, serving as comforting reminders of individual growth and change.”

Through the medium of rug making Dallas attempts to highlight an optimistic ideal that we all hold the capacity to return to these manifested spirits of our thoughts and emotions with a newfound sense of compassion and acceptance.

Dallas Smith, born in American Fork, Utah and raised in the city of Dallas spent the formative years of his life living in the downtown area of the city where both the urban street art and curated museums made lasting imprints on his practice. Dallas graduated with a BFA in New Media Arts from the University of North Texas in December of 2021. His practice consists of a mix of both traditional and digital art making processes that pull primarily from surrealist imagery and illustrative animated forms. Dallas’s work has been showcased in B - Space art Gallery as well as being featured in the Greater Denton arts Councils “30 under 30” exhibition in 2021.

January 27th - February 11th

Opening Reception
Saturday, January 27th, 7pm-10pm

Your partner or crush doesn’t want flowers or art or chocolate they want ART. They want COMMUNITY POWER. They want you to put your money towards SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS.

Hey, sweet cherubs. It is once again time for another fundraiser by your favorite local warehouse gallery, 500x. As we love to remind y’all, we are a completely artist collective run gallery. It is our 45th year in existence, and we’d love to keep this mean streak going. You might know us for our love of the community, of our passion for being a springboard for the arts, our collection of daddy long legs, or perhaps you’ve heard of our nighttime controversies. Either way, it’s a lot of work, and not a whole lot of money to keep this thing going.

We got bills to pay. Unfortunately, a passion for the community is often undermined by real estate agents. We’d rather not have another great 500xit.

So come on by for a show of local art done by our collective!

All art will be $100 or less. A dream come true for art collectors.

Opening reception will be on January 27th from 7-10 PM. The show will be open and available for throwing your wallet at until February 11th (right in time for Valentine’s Day).

Come buy our art and maybe Cupid’s arrow will shoot true for you.

This fundraiser is in tandem with our Valentine’s ones! These will be small works for $100 each. We got bills to pay! We’ve already agreed we’d shack up in a U-HAUL if we ever had to, but let’s avoid that option, agreed? Though if someone did ever wanna donate a bus…. Just kidding! (Or are we?)

This is a great opportunity for those of you who want to start up an art collection but find the price tags out of your range. Take a bet on us - who knows, maybe the MOMA will be asking for it in 10 years. (We are Dallas’s best springboard for the arts and we will fight you on this)

There’s 10+ artists, so you’re guaranteed to spot something you like.

Come on by! Enjoy the art! And if you can’t buy any, at least donate a couple dollars and sip some beers with us on our patio.

Opening night is January 27th from 7-10 PM.

And if you need to wait for a paycheck to drop, this show runs until February 11th, right in time for Valentine’s Day.

This exhibition includes local Palestinian art pieces and infographics thanks to the Dallas Anti-War Committee and DSA NTX.

This family-friendly event will be held from January 6th-20th with the final day culminating in an open mic night on January 20th for performers in the community to express themselves about the violence happening in Palestine. Whether to meet others in the community and find upcoming activities or to learn more about the history of Palestine, all are welcome.

If you wish to perform at the closing reception, email dexter.davyn.d@gmail.com.

“A Gathering in Capricorn’s Sun is an exhibition that takes a look at how we form connection to others and the role it plays in shaping our lives. The question why do we gather? As well as who do we gather with? are equally important. It’s obvious that gathering together can be very enjoyable, but it also can nurture our relationships and promote a sense of belonging and community.

In Capricorn’s Sun is a nod to not only my zodiac sign, but this season’s time of reflection and celebration. This collection of works finds me exploring my life path and those around me whom I feel connected to. The curiosity of placements and paths has led to the belief that there are no coincidences in my gatherings. 11.”

A Gathering in Capricorn’s Sun will be on view from: January 6th - January 21st 2024 at the 500X Gallery located at 516 Fabrication St. Dallas, TX 75212.

There will be an opening reception on Saturday, January 6th from 7 - 10pm.

“plutón en acuario” is a solo exhibition by DFW-based artist Christopher Nájera. This small collection of drawings and sculptures are an offering to a new era in the stars. Through world-making, viewers are invited to step into a preview of the new world. Fantastical drawings and sharp concrete sculptures illuminate the day of epiphany, a day where three gifts were brought into a new spirituality a couple thousand years ago.

Nájera now reinterprets and recontextualizes this into a new era where new forms of existing are to be taking shape. Pluto will enter Aquarius later in 2024, and will remain there for 20 years. This will usher in a new way of being for all those who choose to embrace the shift. May you find love.

“plutón en acuario” is on view at 500X Gallery from January 6, 2024 to January 21, 2024. There will be an opening reception on January 6th from 7 PM-10 PM. The gallery is open 12 PM -5 PM without appointment on Saturdays and Sundays only. 500X Gallery is located at 516 Fabrication St, Dallas, TX 75212.

This month, 500X Gallery asked Jodi Voice Yellowfish to serve as juror for an exhibit spotlighting Indigenous artists. The showcase brought essential dialogues on identity, colonization, institutional performance, and barriers faced by Indigenous artists, highlighting concerns about spaces being taken up by non-indigenous individuals. As a gallery, this experience revealed gaps in our knowledge and understanding that are necessary for the successful execution of such shows. We recognize the need for increased diligence in educating ourselves, ensuring a more informed and considerate handling of the delicate aspects of future exhibitions. We will continue working toward a more inclusive art community in DFW. In 2020 we made a statement during the height of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement that we would do better to serve all marginalized communities. Noticing our pitfalls during the production of the Indigenous Artists Show has shown us that we still have work to do in our efforts to support these communities. Moving forward, we will make a larger investment in vetting applicants for exhibitions so that we can foster a space that prioritizes and amplifies indigenous voices to better align with the show’s intention, and provide educational resources to applicants on the importance of cultural sensitivity in their work.

We will shift our focus from a show that is about a broader indigenous experience to a more specific and individualized one. Our goal is to offer a safe space to all artists, as well as ensuring that we are highlighting communities that are often marginalized and we will remain dedicated and committed to this mission. We apologize to the Indigenous community for our lack of education in navigating these sensitive issues and we are working diligently to do better.

We are grateful to serve the DFW arts community and the vibrant artists who live and work here. We will continue to do the work of making this space and arts community more inclusive and welcoming for all.

We hope you please watch the full panel, as several important discussions were brought up by Jodi and audience members. We are grateful.
